New York Restoration Project

New York Restoration Project (NYRP) is a non-profit organization driven by the conviction that all New Yorkers deserve beautiful, high-quality public space within ready walking distance of their homes. Since our founding in 1995 by Bette Midler, NYRP has planted trees, renovated gardens, restored parks, and transformed open space for communities throughout New York City’s five boroughs. As New York’s only citywide conservancy, we bring private resources to spaces that lack adequate municipal support, fortifying the City’s aging infrastructure and creating a healthier environment for those who live in the most densely populated and least green neighborhoods.

"Two years ago, I heard about NYRP and came to a workshop. Last spring, I helped host the tree giveaway near Cypress Hills. I wanted to introduce tree care and environmental awareness to the neighborhood. It was a popular event - we gave away one hundred trees in an hour! The Cypress Hills area is high in crime it bridges Brooklyn and Queen, on the bottom edge of Queens. We wanted to involve the community and provide greening information. It was our first attempt at engagement, a springboard. It really took off! We are looking to start a compost project later this spring." - Queens community gardener — with Maureen Regan.

Bette Midler has issued her annual year-end match challenge! Through December 31st, she will match every single donation up to $100,000. That means we'll be able to go twice as far in cleaning and greening New York City! Your $50 will make $100 that allows us to care for 5 vulnerable trees. Your $150 becomes $250 which cleans up a community garden in Spring 2016. There are so many possibilities. Help us ensure each of these beautiful trees and verdant open spaces are here to stay, and here for all New Yorkers to enjoy. Donate today at www.nyrp.org/donate!

On November 20th, 2015 we planted the one millionth tree of MillionTreesNYC with New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Bette Midler, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver at Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx. The Empire State Building was shining bright in forest green for all of our fantastic supporters who helped us accomplish this goal two years ahead of schedule! Thank you for your commitment to ensuring that every New Yorker, no matter where they live, has access to beautiful open green space.

Awesome radio piece from Monacle that features our very own Regional Engagement Manager of the Bronx & Manhattan, Charlie Reynoso and the Willis Avenue Community Garden in the South Bronx!

"It’s not just pedestrian plazas that are threatened in New York: community gardens are also another target and may soon disappear to make way for more affordable housing. We discover the value of urban gardening and venture north to the Bronx to visit one of the city’s vital community gardens."

On October 29th, community members enjoyed our annual Fall Fest at Sherman 'Shriek' Park! 350 costumed witches, mermaids, and superheroes came together to carve pumpkins, enjoy Hocus Pocus, and hike in a haunted forest. We had lots of fun and hope you did too! Thanks everyone for coming!
