Friends of the High Line

The High Line is a mile-and-a-half public park built on an historic freight rail line elevated thirty feet above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side, from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 34th Street in Midtown. The High Line is owned by the City of New York, and maintained, operated, and programmed by Friends of the High Line, the non-profit conservancy that raises more than 98% of the park’s annual budget. Founded in 1999 by two community residents, Friends of the High Line fought for the High Line’s preservation and transformation at a time when the historic structure was under the threat of demolition. Today, Friends of the High Line depends on the support of donors and members to provide virtually all of the funding that is necessary to care for the High Line, provide over 450 free public programs every year, present world-class art free of charge to millions of annual visitors, and develop meaningful education and job-training programs for local children and teens. The initial concept of a New York City park on an abandoned elevated railway was viewed as the most unlikely of dreams. Friends of the High Line’s efforts to transform the High Line into the beloved public space that it is today have inspired countless other city officials and citizens around the world to transform old buildings, tunnels, canals, vacant lots, and out-of-use industrial infrastructure for public use.
